RE: California- Shaver Lake, Hwy 168 w/ 5er

I went this past July when the temps in the valley area were 110+. That is a steep hill, somewhere around 10% for 13 miles. I drove up the night before, grabbed a few hours at the bottom of the hill at the Park N Ride before the large grade. Woke up and started up at the hill at 9, the temp 97 already, and did 50 mph all the way up and back down, no problems. Take it easy, and if you start getting warm, there is a wide shoulder to give the rig a rest and cool down.

RE: Michelin is in trouble !!!

They, like many other manufacturers are feeling the economic pinch.

RE: Diesel soot on 5er

I use Spray n Wash for the soot and any tar/oil slung up off the roadway. Spray on, wipe off with a sponge. Does not remove the wax either.

RE: Jayco 299RLS

I have an 08 299RLS - just came back from a week at Shaver Lake. I have not had any major problems with it. The only issue was the rivets in the shower were not attached to the wall as they should have been. They are Eagles, not the Super-Lite version, and use plywood in the floor so the delaminating floor issue mentioned above is not an issue.

RE: Goodyear Marathon Warranty

I haven't had any problems with my Marathons yet, over 10K on them. They were manufactured in May 07. From reading the NTSB complaints it seems like the 15" Marathons are problematic as 99% of the failures were listed as 15". I have the 16" version, and know a few others that have the 16" and have not had any issues either. I am interested if Goodyear steps up to plate on this also.

RE: Locked out....

Update - found out how they get in when you can't - remove the door, then the lock, then put it all back again. The shop that did it was RV repair in Santa Clarita. David, the owner meets you and makes sure the work is done right. Great experience and I recommend them to anyone in the area.

RE: Camping at Yellowstone, Mammoth Spring or Madison Campgound

I was there last year, you can run your gen anytime during non-quiet hours. Mid-Sept. is the best time, crowds are gone and IMHO it's the best time to see the park.

RE: Campground Rates

I travel extensively for work, on a plane on Monday, land, get rental car, check into hotel, look for a decent place to eat. Most of my trips average about 1500 a week. When I am off, I don't want to see an airport, a rental car agency, the inside of a hotel room, or look for a decent place to eat. I also would not pay 100 a night for a spot in a "Resort", just not my thing. When I go a County, State, or National park is good enough for me.

RE: Locked out....

Well, tonight I went to storage to pull mine out for a trip on Saturday. I can't get into it at all, and I have the keys to it. The key will only go in the deadbolt lock about 5/8 of the way. I looked in with a flashlight and there is a pin that I can't get to move, thus the reason the key won't go in. To add to this, called a few locksmiths, all of them said to take it to an RV place, they do not like messing with them. I was lucky and found a local place that will look at it in the morning. Hopefully Jayco steps up and will authorize a non-Jayco Dealer to break in and replace the lock, the trailer is less than 9 months old.

RE: Where is your plug installed?

Mine is located on the left side of the truck bed, about 12" before you get to the wheel well. Works great, that's the same place it's been on the last 4 trucks I've owned. Ditto! x3

RE: Duramax diesel smell

I have an LBZ and noticed the smell changes depending on where I buy the fuel at. When i buy at the C* it smells like it always did, but if I buy it at the off brand place which is a few cents a gallon cheaper, it has a rank (Rotting) smell mixed in with the normal diesel smell.

RE: dehumidifier in 5th wheel?

I wonder if the potassium chloride is the same stuff they sell at Marine Stores for boats that are left dockside? Just a thought, but I know for 2.99 you can pick up a bucket (12 oz) that is good for 900 sq ft.

RE: Low clearance gets another one...

Talking about being aware. I wonder how many of you traveled south on I15 just north of Salt Lake City when the freeway was under construction. In one section the southbound side was diverted to the northbound lane and there was 2 way traffic on the one side. I was going south, made the detour transition and saw a temporary sign with a flashing yellow light "Caution 11' Clearance Ahead". I am at 12'7", so I start looking for a place to stop, but there isn't one, and I look ahead and see an 18 wheeler a 1/4 mile in front of me. Knowing most of them are at 13', I see what he is going to do. He goes under it without any problems. 2 Weeks later I am up there on business and see the low clearance sign as I am going southbound, and then I see what the sign was meant for - the construction pillars on the closed side that were at 11'.

RE: How do you like your satellite radio?

I have had XM for 5 years and would not be without it. I have the SkyFi that I move between the House, Trailer, and the portable box. In my daily driver I have a built in Pioneer Unit with NavTraffic. I did try Sirius for about 6 months, but the DW likes tennis and Sirius has no Tennis.

RE: Ever been snubbed or ashamed because of your RV?

I have camped in a sleeping bag with no cover, tent camped, PUP Camped, and now camp in our 5'er. No matter how you camp, everyone should be able to experience it, and if they enjoy it, keep experiencing it. For some parking next to someone who has an older rig or no rig isn't for them. For me, I don't care who parks next to me as long as they are there to enjoy themselves, have a good time, and just relax and take it all in.

RE: Another question regarding dogs in national parks

If I remember correctly you in Yellowstone you must be a minimum of 25 yards from all animals with the exception of Bears and Wolves which is 100 yards. I went there with my 2 dogs at the end of September last year, didn't have any issues, but also didn't let the dogs out of the truck, and we didn't get to close. If your dog barks at other animals, don't get to close, observe at a distance.

RE: Birds in the pin box

I solved mine by taking a piece of fiberglass window screen, cutting it to cover it, and then attaching it with heavy duty stick on Velcro. I store my cord in there when I am not towing, but they still tried to build a nest until I covered it.

RE: RV Maneuvering

I always use a spotter when backing. I also wait patiently if someone is backing into their spot. I was in Yosemite last year and stopped behind a guy backing his brand new 9paper plates) TT in, and he was having a problem getting the right angle. I remember when the first time I backed in and how nerve racking it was with everyone watching. Well, another car pulls in behind me and starts honking. I put my hand out the window and waved at the guy behind me to wait. I am camping and don't have any appointments to hurry off to, I am there to relax. I wonder how many backing accidents happen because folks just can't wait a few minutes?

RE: Has anyone purchasd an RV online?

Was your experience buying online positive or negative? Positive Were you able to get service after the sale? Yes What did you like about buying online? No haggling with a price, send an email with the make, model, and options, wait to see who is lowest. Would you buy another unit online? Yes Did you visit a local RV dealer before buying online? Yes - would not deal, would only take 2-3K off, said they sell them that way all the time, and if I didn;t buy it, they would sell it to someone else.
